Monthly Fatal Drug Overdose Snapshot: January 2026

By Sadie Broekemeier, MA, LADC, LPCC
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recently introduced a Monthly Fatal Drug Overdose Snapshot, a new tool designed to provide near real-time information about overdose deaths across Minnesota. The January 2026 snapshot gives communities, treatment providers, and policymakers a clearer and more timely understanding of overdose trends.
Historically, overdose death data could take months or even years to fully confirm. This new reporting tool helps close that gap by providing early indicators of suspected overdose deaths from the previous month. Access to quicker data allows communities to respond faster with prevention, treatment, and recovery support.
What the Monthly Snapshot Includes
- Suspected overdose deaths compared to the same month in the previous year
- A 24-month view of confirmed and provisional overdose deaths in Minnesota
- Year-to-date comparisons of suspected overdose deaths
This type of information helps healthcare providers, public health officials, and recovery organizations identify patterns and strengthen strategies to prevent overdose deaths across the state.
Why This Matters for Recovery
Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community affected by substance use disorder. Timely overdose data helps guide important decisions around treatment access, prevention efforts, and community support.
At Recovering Hope Treatment Center, we believe recovery is possible. Our programs support women, mothers, and families affected by substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions through compassionate, evidence-based care.
